| Quiet man Paul Buchanan is a boxer who lets his fists do the talking.
The Geordie, born and brought up in West Denton in Newcastle, enjoyed an illustrious junior career with the Birtley club.
He won eight youth titles – the National Schoolboys on four occasions, the National Association of Boys Clubs twice and the Junior ABAs twice.
Paul started his professional career with a bang when, in the plush surroundings of the Cafe Royal in London’s Piccadilly, he knocked out Gary Jones in the first round of their bout in January, 2001.
Three more wins followed but his six rounds points success over Dean Cockburn at the Stadium of Light in March 2002 would prove to be his last for almost two years.
Paul became a little disillusioned with the sport, but resumed his career in 2004 by signing for Gus Robinson in Hartlepool.
Under new coach Peter Cope, Paul returned to the ring in March last year by beating Davey Jones of Lincolnshire on points at the Braehead Arena near Glasgow.
He boxed again in May 2004, outpointing Gareth Lawrence over four exciting rounds at Woodville Hall in Kent and then took the scalp of Jason McKay at Hereford Leisure Centre in November. His Irish opponent came to the ring with an unbeaten record, but Paul edged the six-round result 58-57 to extend his winning run to seven contests. |
