AT a time when many fighters have seen enough of a boxing ring, Michael O’Gara can’t get enough of it.

Thirty is often an age when a warrior is thinking of downing tools, but the boxer known as Mousey has turned professional.

O’Gara put pen to paper with the Gus Robinson team in late 2008 after spending his entire career with the Brambles Farm club in his hometown of Middlesbrough.

Boxing has been a major part of Michael’s life for the last two decades.

Mousey first pulled on the gloves aged 10. His Irish-born dad, Desy, was a drinking pal of boxing coach Richie Cosgrove, who ran the then Thorntree ABC which several names later is now Brambles Farm.

Michael gave boxing a go and “loved it”.

He boxed around 50 times for the Boro club, winning around half of his contests.

O’Gara’s two highlights were reaching the National Schoolboys finals in London two years in a row. Alas, Kent kid Charlie Rumble was to prove his Nemesis, defeating him in both finals at the Hilton and Bethnal Green.

Mousey admits to having had no intentions of going professional until he did some sparring at Gus Robinson’s Stranton House HQ.

Coach Peter Cope, who had remembered the boxer take on Michael Hunter in the juniors, asked the featherweight if he would be interested in trying the professionals and Mousey said yes.

A very likeable character and dedicated trainer, Michael’s early career in the paid ranks has taken him to Clydebank, Colne in Lancashire, London and Limerick.

Away from the gym, Michael has a girlfriend, Katherine, and a daughter, Chloe.
