HE liked the gym so much, he joined it.

Phil Boyle, a 100 per cent amateur fighter from Halfpenny ABC in his hometown of Middlesbrough, was often a visitor to Gus Robinson’s gym to spar with Nigel Wright.

And when Boyle decided to turn professional, there was only one team he wanted to join.

He started boxing at the age of 13 at the Ormesby club which would eventually become the Halfpenny and is now known as Brambles Farm ABC.

Phil boxed on and off during his teens and it was only when he turned 19 he took it more seriously.

Boxing for coach Richie Cosgrove, he fought 57 times, winning 36, which included victories in the North-East ABA championship and two regional novices successes.

Phil, an electrician, has boxed England internationals Stuart Kennedy and Bradley Saunders during his amateur career.

Light-welterweight Boyle joined the Gus Robinson set up in 2008 and was matched with former amateur foe Eddie Doyle in Glasgow for his pro debut in October 2009.
