The eldest of the Boxing Buchanan brothers, Andrew signed for Gus Robinson in 2005 having previously fought for the Tommy Conroy gym in Sunderland.
Andrew is hard in training in Gus's West View Road HQ, awaiting his debut for the Robinson team.
The middleweight has boxed four times as a pro, starting his career in December 2000 with a points win over Paul Johnson in Peterborough.
Two stoppage wins followed, including a fourth-round knock out of the dangerous West Bromwich fighter Steve Timms at Gateshead Leisure Centre. Disaster struck though in March 2002, when feeling unwell, he got into the ring with Walsall hardman Jason Collins at Crawley Leisure Centre. He lost his unbeaten record with a four-round points defeat.
Like younger brother Paul, Andrew has been out of the ring for a long stint having grown disenchanted with the sport.
But after Paul returned last year, Andrew began training again and has impressed coach Peter Cope, who has followed his career as both an amateur and pro.
“He’s a top-class kid, whose had something like 95 fights,” said Cope. “He has the talent to go a long way.”
Andrew boxed for the Birtley club as a youngster and experienced a glittering youth and amateur career, winning two NABC titles and a Junior ABA crown. As a senior, he reached two ABA semi-finals, pushing amateur legend Chris Bessey very close in a tight contest at the York Hall in London.
He has represented England Schoolboys and Youth and, as a senior, won gold at the European Multi-Nations in Liverpool in 1999.
